William B. Allen, a noted scholar on the American Founding and French philosopher Montesquieu, has made possible a gift to The Institute of World Politics from The Lynde & Harry Bradley Foundation.
Dr. Allen received the May 2024 national award for scholarship from The Bradley Foundation, which includes a financial award. Dr. Allen generously recommended that The Bradley Foundation give some of this award money as a general operating grant to IWP.
Earlier this year, on 31 January, Dr. Allen enthralled an audience in the Barry Room at IWP, introducing—fresh from the publisher that day—a work of a lifetime, his new translation and commentary: Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws (Anthem Press). Preceding the event, Chancellor John Lenczowski reminded the Institute of Allen’s past intellectual contributions to our school, as well as this earlier endorsement from Dr. Allen:
“IWP realizes, at long last, the goal that George Washington always envisioned for a national university, as a home in the capital for youths from throughout the country, who would acquire a liberal education, love of all their countrymen, and understanding of the just role of the United States in the world.”
The Institute is most grateful to William B. Allen and The Bradley Foundation and looks forward to Dr. Allen’s next teaching opportunity here on our campus.
