The Institute of World Politics is pleased to announce that David Glancy, Ph.D., has been appointed the Director of Professional Doctorate Programs. In his new role, Dr. Glancy will oversee the management and development of IWP’s two professional doctoral programs, the Doctor of Statecraft and National Security (DSNS) and Doctor of Statecraft and Strategy (DSS).

“David’s involvement in the development of IWP’s DSNS program since its inception makes this both a natural and well-deserved appointment,” said the Dean of Academics, Dr. Timothy McCranor. “There is no one better positioned to help guide the continued development and improvement of what has become one of IWP’s most successful innovations in doctoral education.”

Dr. Glancy will work closely with doctoral students to design degree plans tailored to their professional goals and develop policy-relevant thesis projects that address pressing national security challenges. He will also collaborate closely with IWP’s Ph.D. Program Director, Dr. Wayne Schroeder, to ensure that all three of IWP’s doctoral programs continue to grow while upholding IWP’s commitment to academic excellence.

“I look forward to working with Dean McCranor, the IWP leadership, faculty, and our fantastic doctoral students as we move forward with these innovative and important programs,” Dr. Glancy said. “One of the best aspects of working with our doctoral students is seeing how they apply new concepts and ideas, which they learn in the classroom and while writing their theses, in their professional careers.”

At IWP, Dr. Glancy teaches courses on economic statecraft, political risk analysis, foreign propaganda, and political warfare. Before joining IWP, he held positions at the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, serving as a Senior Advisor for Political-Military Affairs at the State Department and as a policy analyst and advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, including as Director of the Global War on Terrorism Communications Group. He later worked with Booz Allen Hamilton, advising government clients on strategic communications and supporting National Intelligence University and the College of International Security Affairs at National Defense University. Dr. Glancy holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and a B.A. from the University of Michigan–Dearborn.

IWP launched its Doctorate of Statecraft and National Security (Professional) in 2018 and its Doctorate of Statecraft and Strategy (Professional) in 2025. Both degrees are tailored towards national security professionals, as opposed to those who wish to pursue a teaching career. Since its launch, almost 60 students have enrolled in the DSNS program, a number that represents an increasingly significant share of IWP’s overall student body.

IWP is grateful to the Sarah Scaife Foundation, which has helped launch and sustain all of IWP’s doctoral programs.
