IWP hosts student from Brussels Diplomatic Academy for six weeks

In honor of a new strategic partnership between the Brussels Diplomatic Academy (BDA) and the Institute of World Politics, creating the Transatlantic Corporate Statecraft Partnership, IWP hosted its first Belgian exchange student this semester — Lizzy van hoof. Lizzy received her bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Engineering at the Free University of Brussels, and she is currently working on her postgraduate degree in International Trade and Investment at BDA.

Lizzy chose to attend IWP for her international tutorial program because of its strategic international affairs focus and the caliber of the scholar-practitioner professors at IWP. Lizzy had not previously been exposed to international politics in her education or studied its impact on economics; she is grateful for what IWP was able to contribute to her international business background.

During her six weeks at IWP in DC, Lizzy attended three Oxford-style tutorials at IWP: International Challenges of Public-Private Partnerships in the Cyber Domain, The Art of Diplomacy, and Forecasting and Political Risk Analysis. She also audited other courses, such as Counterterrorism through Cultural Engagement and Development; International Relations, Statecraft and Integrated Strategy; and Economic Statecraft and Conflict.

Lizzy feels that all of the courses in which she participated were enlightening, but International Challenges of Public-Private Partnerships in the Cyber Domain with Professor Michelle Watson was her favorite. Additionally, Lizzy said, “I would like to thank Professors Watson and Tsagronis again for the warm welcome at IWP and for their work with me during the program.”

Lizzy is still exploring her opportunities for the future, but hopes to work internationally regardless of what the future holds.

IWP is excited about the future of its Transatlantic Corporate Statecraft Partnership with the Brussels Diplomatic Academy and looks forward to hosting more exchange students like Lizzy in the spring of 2017.
