“It’s an honor to manage technology that supports our service members. Giving back through IT has been deeply rewarding.”
– Jennifer Joy (’17)

After earning her M.A. in Strategic Intelligence Studies at IWP, Jennifer Joy (’17) launched a successful career in information technology. Through strong communication skills and a knack for project management, she transformed an entry-level role into a mission-driven career supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA), which ensures the medical readiness of America’s service members.

Studying Intelligence at IWP

Jennifer’s interest in intelligence began during her undergraduate studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Wanting to deepen her knowledge in the field, she discovered IWP’s graduate program in Strategic Intelligence Studies. A visit to campus solidified her decision to enroll.

On her first day of graduate school – in Geography and Strategy class – Dr. Marek Chodakiewicz handed out a large world map. He expected the class to memorize it. “I learned very much what graduate school was that day!” said Jennifer. “Tools like this help you along the way, and you don’t realize it until later when they’re actually needed.”

While at IWP, Jennifer was an active leader in the Student Government Association and engaged fully in campus life. Her favorite professors – including Dr. David Thomas, Prof. John Sano, and Prof. John Tsagronis – taught her lasting lessons in communication, particularly how to tailor messages to specific audiences, present the bottom line up front, and deliver ideas with clarity and brevity. These skills would become crucial in her professional life.

Entering the IT Professional Stage

Jennifer’s transition into IT project management began with a well-timed recommendation from a professional contact in Washington, D.C., who informed her of an entry-level IT role that included a security clearance.

Although she had recently completed a degree in strategic intelligence, the pivot to IT felt like a natural extension of her skills. “I’ve always been able to adapt—taking what I know and applying it to new challenges,” she said. While she faced a learning curve, particularly in mastering the technical foundations needed to lead engineering teams, she quickly gained confidence and capability in her new role.

Her strength in communication, sharpened at IWP and throughout her professional journey, became a core asset. “Strong communication is essential in project management,” she explained, “especially when collaborating with diverse teams and clients.”
