The Institute of World Politics congratulates doctoral student Lamia Zia on being awarded a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) International Affairs Fellowship, one of the most competitive and prestigious fellowship programs in the United States.

She said:

“During my fellowship in Indonesia, I will explore how Indonesian government institutions are adopting artificial intelligence in governance and policymaking, with particular attention to models of human–AI collaboration for development, and how emerging technologies are reshaping digital governance in a developing-country context.

“My research will analyze institutional adoption pathways through the lens of the diffusion of innovation, including concepts such as leapfrogging, to better understand how developing countries integrate AI and other emerging technologies—often through hybrid human–machine systems—in ways that may diverge from more mature economies.

“Through this work, I aim to contribute to scholarship on digital governance, policy innovation, and human–AI collaboration, while illuminating the distinctive trajectories of technological transformation in the Global South.”

Ms. Zia’s work reflects IWP’s commitment to rigorous scholarship and applied research on emerging technologies and international affairs.
